Peter Navarro, trade adviser to President Trump, accused India of funding Russia’s war in Ukraine, saying “Brahmins are profiteering by buying Russian oil,” and defended the U.S. decision to impose 50% tariffs on Indian goods, calling India the “Maharaja of tariffs.” Indian leaders, including BJP MP Dinesh Sharma and Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, condemned the remark as factually wrong, culturally insensitive, and damaging to India–U.S. relations already strained by trade and energy disputes.
