Can a broken heart actually harm your health? Experts explain rare condition

Published on: Sept. 14, 2025, 11:55 p.m. | Source: The Economic Times

Broken Heart Syndrome, or Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy, is a temporary heart condition triggered by extreme emotional or physical stress. Unlike a heart attack, it does not block arteries but temporarily weakens the hearts pumping function, mainly affecting the left ventricle. Common triggers include the death of a loved one, a breakup, surgery, or severe illness. Symptoms mimic a heart attack, such as chest pain and shortness of breath, but most patients recover within two to three months. Treatment often involves medications to reduce stress on the heart, while stress management techniques like meditation and social support may help prevent recurrence.
