The bladder is a single-chamber organ located in the pelvis that collects urine. Its main function is to act as a reservoir for filtered urine drained from both kidneys. The normal capacity of the adult bladder is about 400–600 cc. It is composed of three layers of muscle and several layers of epithelium, which help protect the body from toxins and propel urine out when the bladder is full, under neurological control. When the bladder fills, it sends a signal to the brain. In response, the brain sends signals back to the bladder, initiating the process of expulsion. This process occurs under voluntary control, making bladder function an essential part of daily life in humans.
