Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser said the federal surge has helped in fewer gun crimes, fewer homicides and led to an extreme reduction in carjackings. But the surge has led to a “break in trust between police and community, especially with new federal partners.” Bowser said, “We know having masked ICE agents in the community has not worked. And the National Guard from other states has not been an efficient use of those resources.” Bowser said that the federal surge efforts should focus on violent crime. She said that she had problems with law enforcement wearing masks. The Mayor said, “I am devastated by people living in fear.” Bowser said that the answer is to have an immigration system that works and allows people who “want to live in the best nation on earth, raise their families and have a better way of life” to do so.
