Tensions are rising between Venezuela and the United States as Washington deploys additional naval forces, including the guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Erie and submarine USS Newport News, to the southern Caribbean. The move is part of President Donald Trump's crackdown on Latin American drug cartels, including Mexico's Sinaloa and Venezuela's Tren de Aragua. In response, Venezuela said it is sending 15,000 troops to the Colombian border, increasing aircraft, drones, and boats for patrols. President Nicolas Maduro has promoted Venezuela's ambassador in Colombia to division general of the militia.
